Thought I'd share some costume exploration I did for our Bicolline guild.
For those who don't know Bicolline, google it it's an amazing Larp in Quebec and a limitless library of cool medieval costume references.
It was really fun to do this as I needed not only to to think about the look of the illustration but also the feasibility of making it for real. After all the goal is for our group to look like this!
Going with a "Varangian guard" aesthetic. Vikings that were hired as the emperor of Constantinople's private guardsmen. There are no first account illustration or archeological findings that clearly depicts what these men were wearing, and I find that usual depictions were people are just dressing as Vikings quite unsatisfying, so I referenced byzantine and Rus armor instead. Note, the shoulder shield is an anachronism, but it's so practical in combat with a 2 handed spear that it just made sense to include it in our look.
